These winter pictures are from the Black Hills in western South Dakota.
Some people like to escape the cold weather and go south, but
for those who know how to live in the mountains, winter is wonderful.
Cross country skiing, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing,
hunting, ice fishing and hiking are all great winter sports. And in when
pursuing these activities, you can go in many of the same scenes
show in these winter pictures.

The Black Hills are the eastern-most part of the Rocky Mountains.
They rise to more than 7,000 feet elevation. But most of the range
is about a mile high. The main snowfall usuallly descends during
March and April. It's excellent for cross country skiing. The two main
downhill skiing areas are Terry Peak and Deer Mountain. And there
are trails for snowmobiling, mostly in the northern Hills. Are winter pictures
