Rally - Best Short Ride
The
first part of this Sturgis Motorcycle Rally ride is
in the Black Hills National Forest. Eventually you'll
come to Lakota Lake, a small mountain lake that doesn't
have too many visitors. It's a good place to eat a
packed lunch.
Upstream from the lake is Iron Creek, which has a
nice and seldom used trail along it. You can catch
trout in the lake.
Visit
Grace Coolidge at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
Hwy
16A, which is the one you're on, meanders into the
eastern part of Custer State Park. Eventually it goes
to Grace Coolidge Creek where you will bear west again.
The stream is named after the wife of President Calvin
Coolidge, who had his summer White House in the state
Game Lodge in the park.
She was reportedly a real babe, and a nice person.

Monument to Idiots at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
The
park visitor center is along this route, and is worth
a look. There is a good overview of the natural ecosystem
of the Black Hills. And staring you in the eyeball
in a way to make humans feel guilty is a full stuffed
mount of the last Audubon bighorn sheep in existence.
It's dead, of course. All of it's kind were exterminated
by greedy white men. Or, stupid idiots, if you prefer.
The
Needles at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
When
you get to 87A in the park, head north. This is one
of the more interesting roads to bike at the Sturgis
Motorcycle Rally. It winds through the famous
Needles area. It's world-renowned as a good rock climbing
area. And the Needles are cool.
If you are considering climbing one, even an easy
one, you may want to consider this - it's a lot easier
climbing up than climbing back down. There have been
cases where a person has climbed up and was unable
to get down until rescued by climbing experts.
There have been cases where a persons have actually
had to spend the entire night on top of a rock. Sometimes,
they are cold nights. Dark nights. In short, sitting
on a rock all night is now way spend the Sturgis Motorcycle
Rally.
This is technical rock climbing.
