Sturgis
Bike Rally and old volcanoes
At
the Sturgis Bike Rally, Devils Tower is a highlight
for a lot of people. Make sure to walk around it.
It's not far, only about a mile on an easy path. When
you're on foot going around the Tower, anyone at the
Sturgis Bike Rally will be able to get a feeling of
the grandness of the place.
The actual Tower is the remains of the core of an
old volcano. The surrounding mountain that encased
it has since eroded away. Which gives one a sense
of the time of this land, and perhaps the inconsequence
of humans in the overall scheme of things.

You'll
also get some nice views of the surrounding Wyoming
Plains and the Black Hills.
In Wyoming, the Black Hills tend to be less settled,
with fewer homes, roads and other intrusions. As a
result, they're a good place for Sturgis Bike Rally
campers to set up camp to get away from people. You
can even get away from the huge numbers of people
at the Sturgis Bike Rally if you really put your mind
to it.
The Wyoming side of the line also tends to have gentler
terrain.
Your
Public Land and the Sturgis Bike Rally
Most
of the land is in the Black Hills National Forest.
You can camp there free. Just make sure you are on
the national forest and pick a good spot to set up
camp. A lot of people do just that during the Sturgis
Bike Rally.
The only exceptions to the free camping are most of
the developed national forest campgrounds that have
toilets, fire grates, picnic tables, etc.
Find
Out-of-the-way Places during the Sturgis Bike Rally
The
best spots are on the backroads. They can be found
on the Black Hills National Forest recreation map.
The only drawback for bikers is the most remote places
during the Sturgis Bike Rally are located on gravel
or dirt roads. It's not that the roads are bad, but
they do have rock surface rather than pavement. The
smaller logging roads will often be mostly dirt roads.
And they'll be rough.
But
they do offer a way to get a secluded camping experience
at the Sturgis Bike Rally, especially in the Wyoming
Black Hills near Devils Tower.
