The state of South Dakota took in $1.7 million in tax revenues at the Sturgis Rally this year. That’s up 34 percent from 2020.

The state tax collectors are known for being rather notoriously tough during the rally.

Extracting money from vendors before they leave town, or skip town, as the case may be for a few. Thus, the aggressive collection methods in this rather unpopulated and poor state.

Expenses run high during the rally. About every Highway Patrol person in the state seems to be here during early August. And that doesn’t even count the bigger food expense for occupants of the Meade County Jail…
