In
the Battle of the Beer - Budweiser Blinked
With
beer rivaling gasoline in the gallons consumed - the
bars won out over the giant - Budweiser.
The brewery wanted to horn in on some of the retail
action. Budweiser's Bud World traveling exhibit had
been scheduled to make a big display at the Sturgis
Rally. It didn't.
The
bellyaching probably had something to do with it.
Also, the threats. The hundreds of thousands of gallons
of brew that were sold at the rally weren't dispensed
from the big Budweiser promotion.
Some
of the bar owners were so hacked off at what they
saw as unfair competition, they threatened to charge
higher prices for Bud.
Last
year when the big beer selling exhibition was in Sturgis,
people flocked to it. That didn't much amuse bar owners.
This year Budweiser tried to find a neutral location.
They picked the area near the Harley tent by the Civic
Center in Rapid City. That's when the Battle of the
Beer started.
Sturgis
couldn't negotiate a beer sponsor or the rally, either.
So that flow of money didn't materialize.
All
of which probably doesn't mount to much of anything
for bikers. At $3 a can, which is what they were charging
in Sturgis, the stuff was practically liquid gold.
